Following the Great Plains MDF presentation to Kneehill County Council on February 9, 2021, the company formally announced their intention to build North America's largest wheat straw MDF facility in Kneehill County.
“Kneehill County Council would like to thank Great Plains MDF for their informative presentation. Council welcomes new development opportunities and a project of this scale and complexity would be an exciting addition to the region. We look forward to seeing Great Plains progress towards its goal of building North America's largest MDF facility in Kneehill County. The County commits to sharing more information about the project with our residents as Great Plains MDF proceeds through the permitting and development process.” Reeve Jerry Wittstock
The area selected for the proposed facility is known locally as Equity, a former hamlet and whistle-stop. Great Plains MDF’s February 10, 2021 press release indicates that “The site is located in Equity, AB between Three Hills and Trochu, AB. The three-quarters sections of land will house the proposed facility as well as its on-site storage of wheat straw. The site is approximately 90 km from Red Deer, AB and 140 km from Calgary, AB.”
The company anticipates that Great Plains MDF will be pursuing both provincial and municipal permitting within the next few months with construction slated to begin in October of 2021. The final product is expected to reach market within three years.
As Great Plains MDF proceeds with the planning of this project, farmers within a 125 km radius of the site are invited to complete the online survey regarding the acquisition of wheat stock for the facility.
