Prairie View Contracting

Kneehill County is proud to highlight the Agripreneurs and Businesses that make our community great.

Prairie View Contracting is a business that evolved out of need. The farm that Curtis and Julia Jensen purchased, near Huxley, Ab, was littered with old cement buildings and foundations from agriculture operations of the past. Once necessary additions to the farm, these old buildings, and rubble piles were now taking up otherwise productive land. Continuing in their families’ traditions of farming, the Jensen’s grow crops and raise cattle, pigs, turkeys, and chicken on their quarter section and they wanted to make the most out of their investment, utilizing all the space available to them.

Though the simplest solution at the time would have been to haul away the waste, it was also the least economical and the idea of disposing of potentially useful material did not sit well with Curtis. He set out on a mission to see what alternative options he had for removing and recycling the unwanted material from his property. Through his research, he located a company that manufactured portable cement crushing equipment and started to formulate a business concept.

Developing Prairie View Contacting did not come without its challenges. Curtis’s business model was outside the box, so far outside, that he is one of the only businesses in Western Canada that can provide portable crushing services utilizing the specialized equipment he operates. Blazing a new trail provided several challenges with many service providers unsure how to categorize his business, causing costly delays and added expenses in the process. There were many lessons learned along the way, but one thing Curtis wants all entrepreneurs to know is that he “highly recommends having a business plan” and notes that “you may be surprised what you find out along the way”.

Today Prairie View Contracting has expanded its business to provide several services to help property owners maintain their farms and acreages. Portable cement crushing remains the foundation of the business-- turning waste structures into aggregate that can be used in place of conventional gravel around the yard. Corral cleaning, haul-away services, and excavation work are also available year-round and with winter fast approaching, Prairie View Contracting has the equipment to sand your icy driveways and pens and can provide custom solutions for all your clean-up needs.

Give Curtis a call today to discuss your needs and he will be happy to make recommendations and provide you with a quote for services.
